Teaching Tip: Delivering Corrections
When you give a student a correction in class you expect them to change their dancing based on your input. But what if a student continues to need the same correction over and over again? It may be that they just aren’t listening, but it could also be your delivery.
If you aren’t getting results with a correction, try phrasing it in a different way. Perhaps use more detail, or try a metaphor and see if that works. Since each student is an individual, what makes sense to one may totally confuse another. [Read more…]
Visualizing Steps As Practice
Visualizing steps is one way that you can practice. This can come in handy in many different situations, and although at first it may seem easy, it can take a bit of time to get so that you are doing it well. Here are a few tips for running steps in your head:
- Close your eyes. Shutting out visual distractions is the best way to concentrate.
- Use the music. If you have the music you are going to use for the piece, play it while you visualize. If not, try to “hear” the music as you go through the steps.
- Picture the entire dance step. Don’t just think about the feet, make sure you add in the arm movements and head positions as well
- Do this repeatedly. One time is good, but the more you can do it, the better it will work for you.
