Dance Chicago’s 17th Season

Those who live in the Chicago area will want to be sure and check out Dance Chicago as it kicks off its 17th Annual Festival. Featuring an all-new collection of dance styles from hip-hop, ballet and tap, to Latin, jazz and contemporary–over 30 dance groups throughout the Chicagoland area will perform for the audiences’ votes and a panel of judges.

The work of over 200 Chicago choreographers will be showcased at the Festival, which continues from November 2nd to November 20th at Stage 773. Ron de Jesus, internationally acclaimed dancer, choreographer and founder of Ron de Jesus Dance, will present elements of ‘B-Suite’ on First Night, November 2. A lead dancer with Hubbard Street Dance for years, de Jesus will also present ‘Wham of Sam’ as part of the Choreographers’ Showcase on November 20. Other companies on First Night include, Giordano II, NoMi LaMad, Jus’ LisTeN, Full Effect Dance Theatre, Mexican Dance Ensemble and others, all featuring the work of 12 Chicago choreographers.

Dance Chicago Choreography Awards

Dance Chicago, in conjunction with the Cliff Dwellers Arts Foundation, gave awards to several choreographers this year–including the Choreographer of the Year, Sam Cortez (Mexican Dance Ensemble). Mr. Cortez was selected based on the volume and depth of the seven distinctive works he created.   

In addition to the Choreographer of the Year award, otheres were selected to receive the Dance Chicago Outstanding Choreographer (Body of Work) Award for their significant contributions to the 2010 festival, they are:

  1. Billy Siegenfeld (Jump Rhythm Jazz Project)
  2. Chris Courtney (Culture Shock Chicago, Chicago Dance Crash) 

There were also awards for Outstanding Choreography (New Voice):

  1. Melinda Wilson (Curie Metropolitan High School for the Performing & Technical Arts)
  2. Jessica Deahr (Chicago Dance Crash, Independent Dancers)

And finally, The Dance Chicago Outstanding Choreography Award (Team Choreography) was awarded to:

  1. Trae Turner, Angelina Grima, Susan Skrzymowski (BOOM CRACK! Dance Company)

Dance Chicago 2010

Those who live in the Chicago area should plan on taking in some dance at the Athenaeum Theatre this month as Dance Chicago goes into full swing. This festival features the largest and most diverse variety of Chicago’s local dance companies. This year, the event is showcasing over 250 companies and choreographers, 3,000 artists in 13 different programs with more than 300 incredible works.

Special Benefit Performance: Dance Chicago

Dance Chicago is going to kick-off it’s 16th season with a special performance on September 25, 2010, at the Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC). This event will benefit victims of last June’s tornado which devastated Streator and parts of LaSalle County.

All monies from the ticket sales and private contributions will go to a special fund to help rebuild Engle Lane Theater in Streator, Illinois. If you live in the area–come out and support the community that day.

September 25, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.

General admission tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at http://www.dancechicago.com/tour_performances.html, or after August 23 at Centrue Bank locations in Streator, Ottawa, Peru, and Princeton http://www.centrue.com/. Contributions can be made to The Show Must Go On – Engle Lane Tornado Relief, PO Box 883, Streator, IL 61364. Victims of the tornado can attend at no cost by contacting the City of Streator at 815-672-2517.
