The National Centres for Advanced Training in Dance (UK)

May 24, 2010 by 4dancers

The National Centres for Advanced Training in Dance (National Dance CATs) provide world-class specialist dance training as part of a broad and balanced non-residential education for 10-19 year olds. National Dance CATs are part of the Department for Children, Schools and Familiesʼ (DCSF) Music and Dance Scheme (MDS) in the UK, and are designed to be an inclusive way to discover young dancers, give them excellent training, develop their potential and give them a springboard into the professional dance world.

A range of dance training is offered through National Dance CATs, including contemporary, ballet, South Asian and urban, and the students have the opportunity to choreograph, take a multitude of classes and work with dancers from professional companies.

They recently launched a website that provides information about the available funds, the training itself and more.

National Dance Week 2010

April 28, 2010 by 4dancers

If you aren’t already aware, this week is National Dance Week, running from April 23rd to May 2nd…

Many activities are going on to celebrate dance this week in all forms and the official “National Dance Week” organization offers many ways to get involved. If you weren’t on board this year, take a look at some of the events and contests they offer and gear up for joining in next year…

This offers studio owners, schools and universities ample opportunity to bring about an awareness of dance, as well as raise the profile of the program or business within the community. Start planning now for 2011!

PBS: A Dance Timeline

March 25, 2010 by 4dancers

I love PBS. This is a great resource that provides a dance timeline that dates all the way from 1619 to 2001. Although it isn’t all-inclusive, it does a good job of hitting many of the highlights along the way.

This is perfect for teachers or for those who simply want a deeper understanding of what the historical development of dance has been through time. It is interesting to see it in this format–much different than when you learn about it one piece at a time.

Oh, and they offer a free screensaver too.

National Museum Of Dance

January 7, 2010 by 4dancers

The National Museum of Dance opened in 1986 in Saratoga Springs, New York. Here you will find things such as videos, photographs, costumes–as well as a “Hall of Fame,” which is the only permanent exhibit at the facility. In the hall, you will find names such as Fred Astaire, Paul Taylor and George Balanchine. Bob Fosse and Bill T. Jones were some of the more recent additions to the 36 members who are honored there.

The George Balanchine Foundation

October 26, 2009 by 4dancers

gbf

I’m a huge Balanchine fan, so today I’d like to share a great resource with 4dancers readers…The George Balanchine Foundation. If you haven’t heard of this website before, be sure to take a look–especially if you are a fan as well. Besides information about the man himself, you will also find a database of all the dance works that he created. You’ll be able to see such details as when the dance was first performed, revisions and information about visual records if they are available. This is a massive undertaking and I have great respect for those that put it together.
