CD Review – Divas for Ballet: Inspirational Ballet Class Music

August 29, 2013 by 4dancers

ballet class musicby Emily Kate Long

If there’s one word that describes David Plumpton’s Divas for Ballet, it’s “epic.” Few ballet accompanists could pull off playing Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Cher on one album without the whole thing sounding campy or silly. In Plumpton’s supremely capable hands, the effect is glorious. Who wouldn’t want to waltz to Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway” or begin plies with Adele? Plumpton’s skill is in capturing the energy both of the song itself and the exercise it’s designated for. The result is satisfyingly broad in texture, encouraging a full range of expression and energy in the dancer.

There are seventeen tracks of solo piano music for barre and fifteen for center, with no repeats. All tracks are either eight or sixteen measures of eight. If I could change one thing about this album, it would be to include a track in 6/8 time for jetes at barre and for allegro in center. Here it’s all 2/4 and 2/4 time. What Divas for Ballet lacks in timing variation for the faster tracks, it makes up for with plenty of music suitable for adagio, fondus, and port de bras, both at barre and in center. The across the floor tracks are long enough for several groups of dancers to move without running out of music. This is a big plus for larger classes or to enable the teacher to look at smaller groups of dancers.

Because this disc contains only pop music, it’s not one that I would prefer use with great regularity. However, Plumpton’s skill and the fun melodies contained on Divas for Ballet make it a special treat for those days when the class routine needs a shake-up.

CD Review: Dancing Keys 3

August 9, 2013 by 4dancers

by Emily Kate Long

dancing keys 3Dancing Keys 3 contains 29 tracks of original solo piano music. Gill Civil’s compositions are clear and expressive, richly textured, and full of life. The CD includes fourteen “bonus tracks”—repeats of existing tracks that are either double length, slower, or faster. This feature makes Dancing Keys 3 suitable for a variety of class levels. However, the usefulness of these extra tracks is dampened somewhat by the fact that they are all lumped together at the end of the disc instead of appearing next to their originals within the class sequence. Even the most melodious CD can be consigned to the bottom of the stack if it’s difficult to use or disrupts the flow of class. It’s a shame this beautiful music collection has been arranged with a built-in handicap, albeit a small one.

There are thirteen tracks for barre, with double-length versions for plies, tendus, jetes, frappes, ronds en l’air, and petit and grand battements. Center contains sixteen tracks including port de bras, tendus, several waltzes, a march, and plenty of allegro music. Meters and are varied and tempi are clear. Adapted tracks here include double-length tendus, waltz, and sautés; a slower waltz and march, and faster allegro for batterie.

Production shortcoming aside, the music on Dancing Keys 3 is simply lovely.

Gill Civil’s Dancing Keys 3 is available on www.pianomusicforballet.com, Amazon.com, and iTunes.

CD Review: Ballet Class with Piano, Vols 1&2

August 2, 2013 by 4dancers

by Emily Kate Long

piano for ballet piano for ballet 1

Ahn Hyewon and Jeong Mijin’s Ballet Class with Piano CDs each contain over forty tracks of original and classical solo piano music. Volume 1 is comprised mostly of classical pieces, with fourteen of the 41 tracks original compositions by Ahn and Jeong. The first volume includes some fun adaptations of well-known classical music (Ivanocivi’s “Donauwellen Walzer” in a straightlaced 2/4) as well as a few Western popular and show tunes. Volume 2 is mostly original work by Ahn and Jeong, with a few classical melodies tossed in.

Both CDs feature repeated tracks for barre, six tracks for centre work, adage, and pirouettes, fourteen tracks for allegro, and music for pointe work. Meters and tempi are clear and consistent, if somewhat lacking in variety. All of the center tracks are quite short, making these discs best suited for a beginner or intermediate-level class.. The overall flavor of this CD is a pleasant balance of lightness and formality.

CD Review: Music For Ballet Class 3 By Ayumi Hirusaki

December 26, 2012 by 4dancers

by Emily Kate Long

dancer in tutu“Music for Ballet Class 3” by Ayumi Hirusaki contains 27 tracks (including repeats) for barre and 14 for center. The center tracks do not repeat. This disc features a mix of improvisations by Hirusaki, widely-known ballet tunes, and other classical and popular music. Hirusaki’s compositions are lovely; and I would have liked to hear more tracks by her over a few of the show tunes on this CD.

Barre includes a good mix of meters and speeds, all with clear tempos. Composers here include Gershwin, Tchaikovsky, and Bach. The center portion of the CD contains tracks for tendu, adage, two pirouettes, plenty of allegro and pointe selections, a grande allegro/grande valse, coda, and reverence. Music by Joplin, Prokofiev, Minkus, and Hamlish is played with skill and clarity by Hirusaki. Teachers of intermediate and advanced classes will appreciate and make good use of “Music for Ballet Class 3.”

CD Review: Ragtime For Dance by Charles Matthews

December 19, 2012 by 4dancers

piano keysby Catherine L. Tully

This fun CD is a great resource for ballet teachers of all levels. Featuring well-known ragtime tunes such as The Entertainer and Maple Leaf Rag by the wonderful Scott Joplin, there are 16 tracks in all to choose from. Some are by other composers and are not as well known, but each track here works well for dance class.

Ragtime music has a gloriously upbeat tempo and feel to it, so it’s a wonderful choice if you need to give a class a “boost” or infuse a little energy into a combination that still needs work but is getting a little tired…

Matthews isn’t just any pianist–he has extensive experience working with ballet and contemporary dancers and understands their needs. The tracks here are edited into even phrases of eight so they are easy to use and they are played with attention and verve. It’s always nice to have a CD like this on hand for times when you want to change things up a bit and add some pep. Nothing does that better than some good ragtime!

Ragtime for Dance lends a 20’s feel to the classroom and is a super fun CD. There are a few sample tracks here if you’d like to have a listen.
