Summation Dance Company – Performace at BAM Fisher

May 5, 2014 by 4dancers

by Christopher Duggan Summation Dance is a growing company that has always wanted to work with the best quality dance photos and video. This year, I did a dance promo photo shoot with Summation in a studio in Queens as a lead-up to their performances at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Nel and I really appreciate that they’ve made the investment in dance photos and video, and it’s paid off. They have excellent video documentation and they are smart enough to see that having great representation of their work is how you get the next grant or the next gig. It’s how you sell your tickets, how you build your house. They are so dedicated, constantly thinking and developing; they’re just really good artists. Here’s Summation Dance at BAM Fisher.

Finis: Ang-Yi Sheu – Studio 5 At City Center

March 31, 2014 by 4dancers

by Christopher Duggan

Studio 5 at New York City Center is a dance event built around in-studio performances that really gives the audience an intimate look at the dances performed. Hosted and curated by Damian Woetzel, former dancer with New York City Ballet and current Director of the Vail International Dance Festival, the performances give his unique perspective on dance. His connections to the world’s most amazing talent makes the series a hidden gem in New York.

I photographed a performance in February by Fang-Yi Sheu, formerly of the Martha Graham Dance Company, and just as she was in Vail last summer, she was fantastic.

Finis: Dance Heginbotham

December 31, 2013 by 4dancers

by Christopher Duggan

I first met John Heginbotham at Jacob’s Pillow, and Nel was an intern with Adrian, his company manager, so it’s nice having that Pillow connection. John came and did some really fun out of the box portraits with me in my Natural Light Studio in 2012, but his dance company’s performance at BAM Fisher was my first opportunity to photograph his work in New York.

Photos Of STANDARD TIME By Mark Stuart Dance Theatre

November 30, 2013 by 4dancers

by Christopher Duggan

I met Mark Stuart of Mark Stuart Dance Theatre a couple years ago when I shot his work at the Dancers Responding to AIDS’ Dance From the Heart performances. It just so happens he came to Jacob’s Pillow that Summer 2011 and we’ve been friends ever since.mail-2
This year, Mark Stuart asked me to photograph his dance show STANDARD TIME at the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. My wife Nel did the video documentation of the performance – be on the lookout for the dance video on her Facebook page.

Mark Stuart is hoping to bring STANDARD TIME to Broadway. I photographed his showing last spring, and Nel and I are excited about capturing this show from the beginning and watching it grow.

Finis: Brian Brooks And Run Don’t Run

October 31, 2013 by 4dancers

by Christopher Duggan
I’ve known Brian Brooks for a few years now, and we’ve become closer and closer friends through filming with Nel Shelby Productions for Wendy Whelan’s Restless Creature, photographing his work at The Joyce, Dance From the Heart by Dancers Responding to AIDS and his company’s performances at Jacob’s Pillow…
It’s always exciting to see what he has in store for his dancers, and I was looking forward to photographing his dress rehearsal for the premiere of Run Don’t Run for weeks.
Brian Brooks Moving Company performed Run Don’t Run at BAM Fisher in Brooklyn. It’s a great new theater and the dance’s set design was an exciting feature to photograph. Philip Trevino designed the set. He’s a good fiend of ours. We’ve worked with him MANY times.
Another good friend Jo-anne Lee has danced with the Brian Brooks Moving Company for 11 years. This was her last performance with the company, so it was really special to photograph her in Run Don’t Run.
