Best Ballet Shoes Blog – How I got started

February 21, 2011 by 4dancers

Today we have a guest post from Lara–the editor of the Best Ballet Shoes blog….

Lara Friesen

My name is Lara and I recently began a website and blog all about the best ballet shoes.  Having a low arch and a longer second toe, finding ballet shoes that fit was a bit of a challenge for me.  But, it was worth the hunt – a great fitting shoe makes all the difference in your confidence and ultimately, your performance.

It must have been hard for my mother to drive me to ballet classes 4 times a week and buy me new shoes all the time. My mother had always dreamed of being a ballerina, but her immigrant parents didn’t have the money to send her to classes – so the dream continued through me, her first daughter.  I felt I owed it to her to indulge in her dream for a while, and then I learned to love it. 10 Questions With…Lizzie Leopold

February 14, 2011 by 4dancers

Today we have Lizzie Leopold with us to talk about her life in dance…

1.      How did you become involved in dance?

I was actually a competitive gymnast growing up and was continually injuring my knees and ankles.  My body just wasn’t built for the wear and tear of tumbling, so dance was a way for me to continue to be physical with a little less risk.  In the end, dance has offered my a life-long pursuit in a way that I don’t think gymnastics ever could.

2.      What are you doing now in the dance world?

Right now, I am 6 months out of my Masters in Performance Studies (from NYU) and am transitioning back from classroom and computer to studio and theater.  My thesis work dealt with the intersection of choreography and commerce – asking how the business of making dance affects the dance itself.  I am working to bring all of the theory and scholarship of my school work back into practice and make sure that all of the words become a part of the choreography.  In other words, I’m trying to connect my brain and my body – something I hope I will do for the rest of my time as a choreographer. Chicago Area Dance: Leopold Group Modern Dance Company

February 9, 2011 by 4dancers

This is a courtesy post–thought this sounded interesting, so I’m passing it along for those of you in the Chicago area…

The Leopold Group’s trailblazing new work, Voyager, premieres February 17-20, 2011 at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Avenue and will be simultaneously broadcast worldwide on the internet through Ustream.

Voyager is an evening length dance work inspired by Carl Sagan’s famous Golden Record time capsule.  In 1977, Sagan and NASA launched two Voyager spacecrafts, affixing each with a gold-coated copper phonograph record as a “message to possible extraterrestrial civilizations.”  Each record contains 90 minutes of “the world’s greatest music,” an audio essay entitled “The Sounds of Earth,” and greetings in nearly 60 human languages (and one whale language).  Mr. Sagan’s musical selections provide a potent score for Artistic Director and choreographer, Lizzie Leopold, to tackle these persisting questions of communication, humanity, longevity and future.

Review: World Dance Workout

February 8, 2011 by 4dancers

World Dance Workout

Product: World Dance Workout CD

Website: www.worlddanceworkout.net

Cost: $25 for CD, $22 for digital download

World Dance Workout is a CD designed specifically for dance. The music is percussion, and the musicians understand that a steady rhythm is needed to accompany movement. The centerpiece of this album is a nice, hypnotic beat that would be great for many different types of dance class. I can see belly dancers using it, modern dance classes or even dance classes at a health club. [Read more…]
