Dance In The US: Shuffles & Ballet II, The Official School Of Ballet Arkansas

January 30, 2010 by 4dancers

Next on the list we have Arkansas for our series on Dance in the US…

Name: Shuffles & Ballet II, The Official School Of Ballet Arkansas

Location: 1521 Merril Dr., Market & Merrill Shopping Center, Little Rock, AR 72211

About: This school opened in 1987 and it offers a wide range of classes in addition to ballet, including hip hop, jazz dance, tap and modern. They have a pre-professional program for serious dance students as well. Ballet Arkansas is affiliated with the school, and has been since 2001.

I found it interesting that many of the faculty members have a lot of experience in musical theater, which is also offered through the school. Make no mistake, however, there is some serious ballet background there as well, including faculty member Arleen Sugano, who once taught at the Joffrey Ballet School.

Men In Ballet

January 28, 2010 by 4dancers

Just a quick note to point out a guest post I did for My Son Can Dance, a blog written by recent guest poster Nina Amir. It is about gender stereotypes and ballet. If you get a chance, drop by and check out her blog–it’s quite interesting!

Dance Studios: Make More Money

January 27, 2010 by 4dancers

If you are a dance studio owner I don’t need to tell you that making money is a challenge. Regardless of how many students you have or how well you are doing, chances are you can always use a few ideas in terms of how to make a buck.

Some places make their money by charging a decent amount for quality classes. Others sell merchandise at their place. I’ve known studios that charge for recitals and those that hold car washes in the summer months…everyone has their own thing. It’s interesting to see what other people are doing out there.

I wrote an article for Dance Teacher on this subject a while back that you can check out for some tips, but I’d also like to toss this out to readers to see if anyone has ideas they are willing to share…

4dancers: Guest Posts Wanted

January 26, 2010 by 4dancers

Today just a quick announcement…

I am looking for a few guest posts on the following subjects:

+ Triumphs and tragedies–send me your biggest accomplishment or your most embarassing moment as a dancer. Or send both.

+ Inspiration–share a story about a teacher that inspired you.

+ Recital advice–what have you learned that you can share with others?

If you are interested in doing a guest post on one of these subjects–just send it to me in the body of an e-mail, with the subject line “guest post”. If you have a photo as well, that would be great, but it isn’t mandatory. Please include your first and last name, your location and a sentence about how you are connected to the dance world.

My e-mail is writer (at) catherineltully.com (Make sure you include the l)

I look forward to hearing your stories!
