What's In Your Dance Bag?

November 16, 2009 by 4dancers

Copyright 2007, Catherine L. Tully

Your dance bag is a personal thing. Everyone has certain items that they feel are vital to carry with them, be it for class or for a tour. When I was dancing, some things I typcially had inside my bag included:

+ An extra pair of technique shoes
+ Lambs wool
+ First aid tape (I didn’t use band aids…found them too bulky)
+ Granola bars
+ An elastic for my waist
+ An extra pair of tights (that seemed to always be wrapping themselves around everything else in the bag)
+ Tissue and toilet paper (for wrapping toes after I got sick of lambs wool)
+ A small bag of makeup
+ Brush, hair bands and bobby pins
+ A hand towel for wiping the sweat off my brow during class
+ Leg warmers
+ A sweater
I had a pretty big bag, and sometimes I stuffed extra things inside, such as leotards, a notebook or even a book once in a while… [Read more…]

I’m happy to announce that 4dancers will be moving into the area of product reviews for the remainder of 2009 and into 2010. We will be accepting any dance (or dance-related) product for impartial review and will be posting them here for you to read. You can expect to see things such as:

  • DVD/CD reviews
  • Clothing/bag reviews
  • Book reviews
  • Dance gift reviews
  • Textbook reviews

We are also interested in reviewing products that are designed for dance studio owners, such as dance flooring, barres and software.

If you have something that you would like us to evaluate and review, please send an e-mail to:

info (at) moonbeamdigital.com with the words REVIEW REQUEST in the subject line.

*Please note that we cannot meet timeline requests for reviewing products. We will do our best to attend to reviews in a reasonable time-frame, but are not able to guarantee publication at a particular time. Products sent in for review will not be returned, and all reviews will be impartial. Teaching Tip: The Two-Minute Rule

November 10, 2009 by 4dancers

teachIf you are just beginning to teach young children, you may want to keep in mind what I like to call the “two-minute rule”. Little ones tend to bore easily, so besides presenting an energetic demeanor, you can also make sure they pay attention by limiting each exercise to about two minutes or so (give or take).

This means some advance planning. If you have a 40 minute class and teach in two-minute segments, that means a lot of different activities! Still, you can use the same ones over again each week–just make sure that you add a new one from time to time to change things up a little bit.

If you are stuck for new ideas, take a peek at this piece I wrote some time ago for Dance Teacher on how to use games to teach a dance class for young students. It should give you some tools you can use.

Anyone else have any tips? Feel free to share them here–it’s nice when we can all help each other out!
