Dance friends Julie, Lucie, and Alia are back in the lively third volume of the Dance Class series by Beka and Crip, “African Folk Dance Fever.” In addition to new dance adventures (an African class is now part of the girls’ training) the friends share both fun times and hard times at home and school: Lucie’s parents have recently divorced, Alia gets a new math tutor, and Julie’s little sister Capucine is as exasperating and hilarious as ever.
This Dance Class volume, geared toward the middle-school set, sees the girls more grown up yet, kissing boys and slow-dancing at house parties. The overall tone stays light, as in the first two graphic novels, and the artwork is vibrant. Published by Papercutz, “African Folk Dance Fever” is a charming companion to the first two volumes in the Dance Class series and a fun read for tweens.
