Canvas Or Leather Shoes?

July 28, 2010 by 4dancers

This post is more of a question than an informational piece. You see, I’m curious…

Do you prefer canvas or leather ballet slippers?

Personally, I have always used and liked leather shoes, but I know many people who swear by canvas. I always felt as if the canvas shoes were bruising my toes, whereas the leather had more “give”. Even so, I do like the look of canvas shoes on the feet…

So tell me–what is it for you–and why? Are you a canvas aficionado or a leather lover? Either way I’d love to hear from you!

I have always been one to favor canvas. My excuse has always been that my feet are not very good and the last thing I need is a tough fabric making it more difficult to pointe. Recently however, I have found these new leather shoes by Capezio, “Juliet Split Sole.” When you put them on you feel like you are wearing bedroom slippers! They are made out of the softest leather and last so much longer than canvas!! I have also heard dancers raving about the new “Pro Elastic” shoe made by Bloch, which fall under a new flat shoe category, being neither canvas nor leather. I am ordering a pair soon and can’t wait to try them! You can find both shoes on Discount Dance Supply.

I just got new ones that are leather, but have mesh at the bottom and mesh in between leather strips at the top. I love them, I can’t even feel them on my feet. I got them at capezio. Here is a picture if you are interested! http://mariasmovers.com/2010/07/ballet-shoes/

When I used to do ballet (many years ago, ha ha) we had to wear leather, until they changed the rules, and then we had to wear satin ones, which were comfy and looked really professional. So I like those. Though that’s not actually an option if this was a questionnaire … 😮
