The Bun

March 18, 2010 by 4dancers

I remember many a day, sitting with my Mom behind me with her pulling and twisting my hair into a tight bun for class. As a young girl, I hated the ritual, but now I’m able to appreciate the beauty of this classic hairstyle. Often associated with ballet, the bun is not too hard to do, but here are some fun resources to check out for all the details–and a twist or two…

Basic bun 101 – YouTube video that shows how to do a basic bun, complete with hairpins and a hairnet.

Redken – This video tutorial gives some great tips for a good, braided bun.

French Twist – Of course, if you want something a bit more fancy, you can always try a French twist for variety.

I was never a “ballet mother” hovering over my daughter as she progressed through her years of dance (or at least I hope I was never perceived as such!). Because of her natural talents I did support her and, yes, many years spent doing buns and driving to classes and making costumes and sewing on ribbons and elastics. Catherine’s college money went toward ballet and jazz classes with the best schools in Chicago. When she made her choice to pursue other ventures I was not devastated. Over the years I’ve seen her maintain the incredible discipline and confidence she gained in the studio and on the stage. Her expertise has allowed her many opportunities including teaching classes in Japan and creating this blog. Today I heard three things that will help stave off Alzheimer’s Disease: learn a new language, do something challenging and be a long term dancer. Catherine will have no problem with that!
    With love, Mom

    No–you were never a ballet mother. : )
And don’t think I am unappreciative of your efforts–hairstyling, sewing or otherwise! Wouldn’t be where I am today without you Mom. Thanks for the comment.
    Love,
    Cath
